The Durruti Column: der Name einer anarchistischen Miliz im spanischen Bürgerkrieg, angeführt von Buenaventura Durruti, einem Revolutionär, der eine der herausragenden Figuren des Befreiungskampfes war. The Durutti Column: die erste Band auf Factory Records, Lieblingsband von Tony Wilson, dem Factory-Gründer. Strahlender aber zurückhaltender Nukleus der Durutti Column: Vini Reilly, Gitarrist und Klavierspieler. Eigentlich IST Vini Reilly The Durutti Column. Ab 1981 wird er von Schlagzeuger Bruce Mitchell begleitet. Brian Enos Lieblingsalbum ist angeblich The Durutti Columns “LC”.
Vini Reilly sagte einmal in einem Interview “I hate rocknroll, and everything rocknroll stands for. I love the new wave and everything the new wave stands for”. Und weiter: “I wouldn’t like to try and place my music anywhere, really. Call it new music, but not radical or unpleasant. I believe in elements of harmony and melody and blending them, and making them original, but not unlistenable. Because there’s no point in making a piece of music if people aren’t going to be able to listen to it.”
