Wow- made it to 50!

I first stepped in to Cashmere Radio HQ in May 2016 to do a closed door pilot session for the rather ‘fatigued’ founders – with a view to doing a regular show there. Having just returned for East Africa at that time, I was heartened to find a space in Berlin that was both warmly welcoming, and musically adventurous – two things Berlin generally was not. Having left in 2012 the city had felt rather boring musically – mono-thematic parties where the music would exist safely within the strict genre boundaries of either house or techno for hours and hour and hours on end. With my own recently expanded musical horizons, as well as a clear surge in new and interesting sounds and parties in the city, Cashmere became a nexus for the outsiders and fringe characters pushing exciting music. I’m extremely proud to still be a part of this family.

Bush of Ghosts was and is an attempt to draw a line through some of the music I love and that I feel is connected in fairly intangible ways. There’s a strong thread of ‘outer-national’ sounds, which I suppose could be defined as outsider music from all over the world. I’ve tried to avoid a lot of the better known artists that might also fit within the show’s remit – Although I love Fela Kuti I don’t think I’ve played anything by him in 50 shows. At times I’ve tried to represent more of the contemporary sounds coming out of Africa in particular, but very much with a skew towards the more wonky, or ‘deep’ vibes. (You might be able to tell I’m very uncomfortable with a lot of the terms I’m using to describe music here). Other threads through the show tend to be a leaning towards balearic and downbeat sounds, and this has been heavily influenced by the scene around Salon des Amateurs in recent years. I’ve also enjoyed reaching back into my shelves and pulling out bits and pieces from the past few decades, whether it be the odd drum n bass roller or The Fall, or King Tubby et al. In my mind they all have their place within the Bush of Ghosts somehow, although I’m not 100% clear why. The show’s title is a clear steal from Brian Eno and David Byrne’s 1981 album, which itself is cribbed from Amos Tutuola’s 1954 novel My Life In the Bush of Ghosts. Both these works inhabit a psychedelic, hallucinatory world – Tutuola’s tale of boy at the mercy of various outlandish mythical beings, and Eno and Byrnes’s trippy collage of sampled references and cultures. I chose it for these reasons, but also with a slightly tongue-in-cheek idea to not take things too seriously.

I hope those that have tuned in or showed up for the broadcasts have felt it was worth the effort, and I am deeply appreciative of everyone that took the time. I have met some close friends through the show, and it’s been a central part of many wonderful nights for me over the last 4 years. I’m particularly thankful for the guests that have joined me or held it down in my absence – love and respect to Matteo Spano, Jelena Auge, Simon Parrott, DJ Rachael, Emile Hoogenhout, Keope, Spooky J, Quixosis, Luis Delgado, Jan Schulte, Lucas Croon, Karl Valami, Mujer Cobra, Eli Pavel, Maxine L, Tropical Camel, Eck Echo,  Doom Chakra Tapes, Hugo Mendez, Tropical Timewarp, Tom Bolas and of course Mimi Sijui – who has been a key inspiration for the show since its inception.

Finally, massive love to the Cashmere crew that make it all possible – Gaico, Dan, Filo, Lucas and Matty – and all the folks that contribute their time and energy to making this community what it is. Can’t wait to hang together soon over some music and refreshments. 👻👻👻
