3I/Atlas — the third interstellar visitor to be observed visiting our solar system — makes its conjunction with the sun on the day that this radio mix airs on October 29th, 2025. This comet is confounding cosmologists with its numerous anomalies never observed before. Mysteries of the universe we are just beginning to discover.
The most striking anomaly is its nearly perfect angular entrance to visit our solar system. 3I/Atlas is aligned with the ecliptic plane of planets around the Sun to within 5 degrees, allowing it to pass close to Mars, Venus, the Sun, and Jupiter. On December 19th, Earth's orbit will bring it to its closest distance to 31/Atlas. This angle has just a 0.2% likelihood of randomly occurring. It's on a perfect front row trajectory to observe our solar system as it passes through.
More puzzling still? 3I/Atlas arrives from a location in deep space that is separated by approximately 4 degrees in right ascension and 8 degrees in declination from the direction of the "Wow! Signal", which was detected on August 15, 1977 as a strong narrowband radio signal by Ohio State University’s Big Ear radio telescope. Its origin was speculated to be extraterrestrial, though there are competing natural cause theories. The chance of two random directions in the sky being aligned to that level is about 0.6%.
These anomalies along with five others, including its gargantuan size, forward jet tail, unusual chemical composition, and light emitted by the object, distinguish 3I/Atlas from any previously observed comet. We have never seen something like it.
The arrival of 3I/Atlas is a reminder of our position in the vast expanse of the unknown. As we look up, we ponder the origins of consciousness. We peek beyond the veil to the mysteries of the universe beyond our understanding.
