In the third episode of "Das Berliner Cambalache," hosts Matias and Flecha, along with producer Ludovico, delve into the profound impact of the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) on Berlin and Brandenburg. This period of widespread warfare, initially a dynastic dispute in Bohemia, escalated into a religious and political conflict involving major European powers like Spain, Sweden, Denmark, and France. The war brought unprecedented destruction and loss of life, particularly in the German territories, and concluded with the Treaty of Westphalia, which reshaped state sovereignty and international politics.

Berlin-Brandenburg was a significant hotspot during the war, enduring invasions and occupations by various forces. Despite the devastation, the region experienced a remarkable recovery under the leadership of Friedrich William, the Great Elector. His policies of religious tolerance and militarization laid the foundation for Brandenburg-Prussia's rise as a major European power. This transformation culminated in the elevation of Prussia's status under Frederick I and Frederick the Great, setting the stage for the eventual unification of Germany.
