Deep Fried DJ #4 – [cries in spanish]
Transcript:
Hello hello, you're tuned in to Cashmere Radio and this is your host, Victoria Secret, with the fourth episode of Deep Fried DJ.
Today's show is inspired by the meme titled "[cries in spanish]". This meme is a close up, portrait-like video still of a Latina woman with brown, chin length hair in a blown out side part, dark smoky eye makeup and lined lips. She's sobbing, but still looks fabulous, and a a caption in brackets reads "cries in Spanish". The image and caption are from a Mexican novela called Maria La Del Barrio, and the woman depicted is the notorious villain Soraya Montenegro.
This meme and her image are associated with acting or feeling overly dramatic. To me, it's a fine line between a natural urge to want give in to emotions, and a harmful stereotype about Latina women.
So in todays show, we'll explore the common dramatic romantic narratives of Latin telenovelas. All the songs are sung in Spanish, and they all touch on motifs of love, obsession, deception and heartbreak.
