Jenny Gräf presents a set created specifically for Cashmere Radio, incorporating her hand-built sculptural speakers into a live performance.

In recent years, Gräf has been developing what she calls “speaker-instruments”: hand-built speakers made from porcelain, copper wire and magnets, assembled in different configurations to explore transduction—the transformation of one form of energy into another.

Transformation and becoming are recurring concerns in Gräf’s recent work. In this performance, she moves between the particular sonic spaces produced by the speaker-instruments and conventional loudspeakers, performing with voice, a hand-built bow and field recordings. The speaker-instruments do not simply reproduce sound but physically transform it through their materials, resonances and irregularities.

Gräf’s performances are characterized by movement between contrasting sonic states: from deep, heavy and resonant sounds to thin, fragile and almost weightless ones. For Cashmere Radio, these shifts become a way of exploring sound itself as something continually in the process of becoming.

The session took place during Jenny Graf’s residency at the station co-organised with Art Music Denmark.
