ROTA

FROM ROOTS TO NOISE

The unstoppable continuous rotation.

The inevitable change. The world is different.

Rurality is activated as a territory for new practices.

Through care, a new sound ecosystem is generated from the fissure.

Art Direction: Selu Herraiz

Curation: Diane Barbé and Selu Herraiz

Organized by: Aadk Sp.

Rota is an Experimental Music festival with 7 years of trajectory that takes place in the rural town of Blanca, an oasis in a desertic region of southern Spain. With the motto From Roots to Noise we seek to create an editorial line that draws the spectrum between traditional and contemporary, a sound that travels from primitive and raw to post-industrial electronics. Runned by AADK Spain and Aldarrax Label, its main objective is to generate awareness and interest in peripheral territories, bringing the most innovative contemporary culture to neglected areas. Its programe includes concerts, educational activities, workshops with the local community, publications and context-related sound residencies. Musicians are invited to explore the local environment and its traditions, they develop site specific sound pieces which then form part of the festival line-up. This way ROTA works as a bridge: it links folk and avant-garde sounds, brings the cosmopolitan to the rural and highlights both underground and academic music. ROTA focus on emerging and established artists alike. Inviting actors to share spaces for creation, meals and hikes, we aim to generate new communities around sound and connect the isolated local circuit to international reference points. The curatorship also has a strong emphasis on the visibility of women and BIPOC artists in the field.

Territory

AADK Spain’s headquarters are located in the town of Blanca, settled in the heart of Ricote Valley, a small oasis in the arid regions of southern Spain with a rich memory of Arab culture and influences from Sufi poetry and rituals. A land of experimentation for mystical figures such as Ibn Arabi. It is known that the origins of Ricote date back to the early 8th century, with the Muslim occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. The town has 6,000 inhabitants and lies on the banks of Segura River, a fundamental water supply for the region. Blanca’s foundation dates back to the 13th century being initially known as “Negra”, it is believed that because of the dark soil of a mountain nearby. The village is circundad by a mountain range and an extensive area of pine forests. From its highest cliffs one can perceive the contrast between the intense green of the valley, and its semi-desert surroundings.
