Crush’s romance with Miriam Simun continues and CSC #23 explores a feeling that arguably connects us all: jealousy. In an all-encompassing romantic and political economy of forced (and fetishized) austerity, this “chameleon feeling” comes in different colors. Its German equivalent Eifersucht preserves the late Latin origin of zelus, i.e. “zeal” (Eifer), and accurately marries it with the uncontrollable and always insatiable urge of Sucht (addiction). Jealousy, while triggered by someone else’s action and/or mere presence, is entirely self-directed and self-preserving. We might be inclined to reduce it to a feeling most typically aroused when a person perceives a threat to a valued relationship from a third party, an attempt to reclaim control or, alternatively, a desire to have, own, or represent what another has, owns, or represents. But its roots are ancient. It is not so much that one merely feels anxious, threatened, hurt or angered by this other but rather that somebody else’s actions and/or desire for someone else or something beyond us is conceived as a desacralization, devaluation of the very core of ourselves. In this alleged secular age of competitive self-optimization, Instagram and co., one could posit that we took on the role of the “jealous God” (Exodus 20:2-6) in our own lives – insatiable holes that can never be filled. With the help of Eve Rickert’s and Janet Hardy’s More Than Two: A Practical Guide to Ethical Polyamory, Miriam guides us in this musical journey of unlearning and overcoming the God in us. CSC #23 was conceived in conjunction with the exhibition Eifersucht – a project organized by Parliament (Paris), Galerie Noah Klink (Berlin) and Margareta von Oswald as a way to work in solidarity by sharing resources in times of limited international exchange.
