Essay 1: "A SONIC THINKING OF DIRT AND NOISE: THE SOUND OF FAVELA FUNK DJS
Listen to the tuin
"Our first essay is written by GG Albuquerque, a journalist, music critic, and researcher of Afro-diasporic and global south electronic music. In ‘A Sonic Thinking of Dirt and Noise’, GG explores the raw and radical sounds of Brazilian funk.
The essay takes us to the heart of São Paulo’s bailes, where noise, distortion, and mistakes become the foundations of funk Bruxaria and funk mandelão. acts of defiance against the sanitized norms of the music industry.
Here are three tracks that embody the chaos and creativity of these scenes. As you listen, imagine the energy of the baile—the crowded streets, the booming speakers, and the buzzing freedom.
Tracks:
MC Bin Laden - "Lança de Coco"
DJs K, Menor 7, Noguera, and Magro - "Tuin Destrói Noia"
MTG = SENTA E SE ACABA VS SENTA E QUICA ((DJ ZL))Dejota Malvado
Essay 2: "Paredões: Sonic Walls, Embodied Listenings, new territories"
Written by Felipe Maia, a Brazilian journalist, ethnomusicologist, and DJ, ‘Paredões: Sonic Walls, Embodied Listenings’ dives into the world of mobile sound systems in Brazil.
Felipe explores how paredões—massive, self-contained sound systems—aren’t just technical marvels but cultural artifacts. They amplify community, joy, and resistance, embodying the spirit of the baile funk scene.
While we can’t stream Felipe’s Funk.BR São Paulo (NTS Album), we invite you to explore it as a companion to this essay. For now, enjoy these tracks that channel the overwhelming presence and power of paredões.
Tracks:
ATRAS DO PAREDÃO FORA DA LEI • MC's 7BELO, 2JHOW E MAURICIO DO DOZE • DJ DEIVÃO
MC Dede - Pow Pow Tey Tey (KondZilla)
Felipe Maia - Suggested listening: Funk.BR São Paulo (NTS Album)
Essay 3: "Ecotonal: Resonant Bodies in Resistance"
The third essay, written by María Huerta, takes us to Monterrey and Mexico City. ‘Ecotonal: Resonant Bodies in Resistance’ explores the interplay between rivers, cumbia sonidera, and anti-colonial struggle.
In Monterrey, the Santa Catarina River becomes a symbol of resistance, flowing against the forces of industrial extractivism. Cumbia, like water, moves freely, refusing to be silenced. María shows us how sound and environment are intertwined in acts of defiance and celebration.
These tracks honor Monterrey’s cumbia traditions and their connection to land and resistance.
Tracks:
Celso Piña - "Cumbia sobre el Río"
Grupo Tigrillos - "La Cumbia del Río"
Sonido Gallo Negro - "La Patrona"
Essay 4: "Sonic Statements in Lima’s Sound Systems"
Our fourth essay is written by Irazema H. Vera, a sound engineer, music producer, and researcher from Peru. ‘Sonic Statements in Lima’s Sound Systems’ delves into Lima’s unique soundscape, where dub, cumbia, and Andean traditions collide.
Irazema reveals how these sound systems turn public spaces into platforms for resistance, dialogue, and joy, creating sonic connections that break through colonial hierarchies.
The tracks we’ve chosen reflect Lima’s sonic hybridity, blending global bass culture with distinctly Peruvian influences.
Tracks:
Dengue Dengue Dengue - "Simiolo"
Los Mirlos - "Eres Mentirosa"
Chakruna - "Guaracha Tribal"
Essay 5: "La Naturaleza del Sound System es Compartir"
Our final essay, ‘La Naturaleza del Sound System es Compartir,’ is written by Ollin Miranda, an artist and cultural producer deeply engaged in sound system culture.
Ollin reminds us that sound systems are more than technology—they are tools for connection and solidarity. This essay highlights how the act of sharing sound creates spaces of resistance and joy, breaking down barriers and fostering collective life.
These tracks capture the communal spirit of sound systems. Listen, and imagine yourself at a session, immersed in vibrations and togetherness.
