I met Vladimir Lenhart, a journalist and musician hailing from the Slovakian minority in Serbia, almost ten years ago. He was living next to a picturesque graveyard in Novi Sad. He was collecting tapes – obscure to greater or lesser extent – from the Balkan region and beyond mixing and manipulating them from several walkman players, creating a psychedelic journey through unrecognisable sounds. Turbofolk anthems, language lessons, heavy metal, loops, chanting, goat and sheep dialogues. Thus, Lenhart Tapes was born. The mix you are about to hear is a recording of his live set from a Belgrade coffee bar, and largely consists of Gnawa music tapes sourced in Morocco, besides Korean and Balkan music.
