This edition of La Casa del Obrero Mundial is a mini-special dedicated to te great late writer Lucia Berlin, author of the short story book ‘A Manual for Cleaning Women’, which I had the honour to translate from its original English to my own Lithuanian and had a complicated and passionate relationship for the last three years – first convincing three editorials to actually do it (the third did, long live Kitos knygos!) and then working through the 60s 70s 80s Americanisms and other quirks from the wonderful world of Lucia. Borne in Alaska, grown up in Chile and Texas, later resident in Oakland, Mexico City and other places this fabulous author had a full of adventures and colourful, sometimes hard, sometimes euphoric path of life and it was a pleasure working on this translation hence I felt so connected to the way she’s lived and how she saw the world. So this episode is dedicated to her – readings of her texts that specifically tell about her experiences of Mexico City, mixed with music and moods from this side of the ocean. ‘In the dark soul of the night all the liquor stores are closed’.
