Expanding upon her 2021 somatic writing and performance workshop Reading the Body, Monilola Ilupeju offers Resonant Limbs, a new radiophonic writing workshop with Cashmere Radio. The workshop is founded on the understanding that the voice is not only an extension of the body, but the body itself. It is the resonant limb through which we can begin to wade through the murkiness of interior life and articulate our experiences with more nuance and specificity. Meditating on the alchemic potential of the voice to ground, connect and empower, the workshop invited writers to read their new and pre-existing auto-biographical texts on Cashmere’s radio waves to listeners all over Berlin and the world. The live readings were accompanied by breathing exercises and group discussions in which participants could give feedback to each author on the air.
Participant Biographies:
Edna Bonhomme is a historian of science, editor, and cultural writer who lives in Berlin, Germany. One of her tasks is to mine through the archives and complicate our understanding of contagion, toxicity, and maladies. Through critical storytelling, Edna narrates how people perceive modern plagues and try to escape them. Her essays have appeared in Al Jazeera, The Atlantic, The Guardian, The London Review of Books, The Nation, and elsewhere. Her forthcoming book, Captive Contagions (Simon & Schuster), examines confinement’s role in fostering and hindering epidemics.
Hugo Scheubel is a twenty-three year old French writer and storyteller based in Berlin. Recently graduated from a Master’s in International Affairs, I am now focusing on exploring, researching and deconstructing dynamics of power and self-delusion imbued within queerness, family ties, and relationships. My principal medium is fiction, as I am currently working on my first novel whilst also writing short stories, poems and plays.
Charmaine Li is a Toronto-born writer and editor based in Berlin. Her work has appeared in mono.kultur, British Journal of Photography, Atmos, C magazine and Newsweek, among other publications. She writes, often about art and technology, with a keen interest in reflecting on the possibilities of being with the unknown and the unknowable. She is also the initiator of ONEIRIC.SPACE, a research vessel exploring how dreams intertwine with waking life, on an individual and collective level.
Ben Luton is a student of CD Wright, a novelist, and an avant-garde radio artist from the Gulf Coast, with the notable distinction of Hurricane Katrina refugee. His poetry can be found in Lana Turner and his extraterrestrial dispatches on Cashmere Radio (formerly on Radio Free Brooklyn). He is creating a class on documentarian poetics and anthropology that he hopes to hold at the station house next year
Ilaaf Khalfalla is a self-proclaimed „professional girlboss“ working within the intersection of cultural production and commercial fashion. In her work she’s interested in the construction of stories, the realities they tell and the norms that birthed them. Currently she’s pursuing a degree in cultural theory and art history at Humboldt University in Berlin.
Ace of Demons is a Berlin-based and raised DJ and producer currently signed at Live From Earth’s sublabel Live From Earth Klub. Always killing, never chilling, the dancefloor gives her comfort, because it’s where she finds her own rhythm: A rave heavy, genre-bending sound, led by rapid rhythms, full of vivid mash-ups, tempo changes and unusual combinations in sound, while her slapping beats win every mortal combat. She recently founded a queer-focused project called HeartQore. Their aim is to take the alliances they built as artists and event organizers in the club world to a broader societal scale and cultural audience. They did their first move on Berlin’s cultural scene last year with a transdisciplinary event for Tag der Clubkultur. In Vibe Check, her bi-monthly radio show at Refuge Worldwide, she invites artists to talk about the emotional, technical and artistic aspects of a track they made. Under her old alias Ace of Diamonds, she already played at events like Melt Festival, Fusion Festival, Artlake, Red Bull Music Festival, Boiler Room or at Haus der Kulturen der Welt.
