My name is Audrey Amstutz. This is my first episode of Near to the Wild Heart, and I suppose this episode is a good opener because it’s about openings or it is a birth, it bursts softly on to something that is new or that doesn’t exist yet, I imagine all of this music being built on a fundamental silence. It is meant to encompass a certain kind of intimacy, the intimacy of the voice and the purest kind of interior. It’s not distracted yet but full of the kind of fresh love that is only in childhood or in some place with no limits and nothing watching it. It won’t be found again, it’s a plane that can’t be again reproduced, but then again that’s maybe not true and we can return to some sort of purity, or in age we do gain a level of purity of spirit or of purpose, but this isn’t about purpose at all, and it has the clarity of something vibrating and cleaned. Near to the Wild Heart has to do with Clarice Lispector’s first book of the same title, which comes from a line in Joyce… and through this swell of references what I’m getting at is being young and attempting to get somewhere close to the heart of life without the contingencies or without getting muddled in yourself, because you’re not yet solid. But in the center of the mix and in the center here there is a level of sadness, or there is no thought without the possibility for sadness, but not without warmth. That’s all I’ll say because part of this process for me is not speaking and trying to lingustify making the mixes. I hope you like it.
