Amongst two humans, we might ask questions and reply with thoughtful answers, we might start to pick up on what the other person thinks is funny or sad, what makes them distant or melt. We might learn to observe the way they tell stories about their life. But what lives beyond language? How do our bodies communicate on a molecular, hormonal, bacterial level? How, as new beings in this world, as babies, do we begin to learn to express ourselves and our needs and desires? And, what is it like to get to know a new being who doesn’t have the language yet to tell you who they are? And for that matter, What is it to get to know a more-than-human-being? What is it to hone in on their language, their vocalisations, their moods, their needs and desires? How do we learn to love and trust each other if we can’t speak the same language?

  1. Thank you forever to my dearest friend and collaborator Roger 3000 for Something Like's jingle
  2. Thank you to Robin Watkins and Rosa Aiello for being such important parts of making this show
  3. The cover image for this episode is a drawing I made of my parents' dog Bridget for my dad's birthday a couple of years ago. This episode is very much dedicated to her memory.
