- Field Recording
- Atmospheric
In this episode of Svietas, listeners are introduced to two distinct but equally immersive soundscapes: one by Geir Jenssen (aka Biosphere) and the other by Jani Hirvonen. Through field recordings and environmental sounds, both artists offer a deep sonic journey into the landscapes they have encountered, capturing moments that reflect the places they’ve traveled.
Geir Jenssen – Cho Oyu 8201m
This album features field recordings made during Geir Jenssen’s expedition to climb Cho Oyu, the sixth-highest mountain in the world, situated in Tibet. Recorded in September and October 2001, the sounds reflect various stages of his journey, from conversations among villagers in Zhangmu and Tingri to the quiet isolation at higher altitudes. The recordings blend natural elements like the wind, animals, and mountain life with subtle sonic textures, creating a narrative that evokes both the physical and emotional challenges faced during the climb.
Jani Hirvonen – Untitled Indian Soundscapes
Jani Hirvonen’s work captures sounds from his travels across India between 2012 and 2013. Using a combination of environmental recordings and local temple music, Hirvonen presents a vivid portrayal of Indian life, from bustling markets in Jodhpur to the spiritual energy found in Maheshwar and Omkareshwar temples. Each soundscape highlights the richness of local culture, blending the audio of daily life with the resonant, sacred sounds of temples, creating a detailed sonic diary of his journey through India. Both albums rely heavily on field recordings, giving the listener an immersive experience of place through sound.
