It is undeniable that we are living in uncertain times. For those of us failing to fit the patriarchal neoliberalist mould, we have lost hope in the future. We can see capitalism is not working but we cannot yet envisage an alternative. In a world where security is no longer feasible, the only constant we can rely on is change. Regardless of one’s point of reference, we can understand that every aspect of life, physical and mental is in flux and perhaps this transience is the only thing we can depend on.

This month we have invited Aloïs Yang to ruminate on these ideas and create an hour of relief from these anxieties. A temporary suspension of reality, where the listener can speculate on alternate modes of existence that reject hetero-patriarchal systems of oppression.

Aloïs Yang is a media artist, performer and experimental musician who produces work that explores the relation and interaction between people, sound, and the external world. The work is influenced both by scientific reference and human imperfection of understanding the nature. Interaction in Yang’s work takes place not just in objective reality, but also inside of intimate experience and imaginative projection. These includes traveling among such varied subjects as brain function, facial expression, micro/macro realities, virtual time-space, starlight, apocalypse, and the beginning of the Universe.

AloÏs Yang Guest Mix

Track 1 (00:00-35:50) – “Xïola Yin Live @ Torhaus Wehlen for Picaro (Rough cut)”
An experimental screening of the film Picaro, recorded at Vernissage / Summer School Mayres, at Torhaus Wehlen 2019.Xïola Yin, the opposite yet not contradict side of Aloïs Yang, played a live improvisational set as the soundtrack of the film that has never been seen. Which is later edited by the director as the final cut.
The short film, ‘Picaro’ is a fiction-based story which imagines an experience of a contaminated environment, and the effects it has on the human body and its behaviour. Alone in this hostile and unknown situation, Picaro wanders through the unforgiving landscape in search for ways to adapt to his new surroundings. His aim is to redraw a map of consciousness against the unknown nature, and his lost memories. The film was shot in Czech Republic, 2019.

Track 2 (35:50-42:50) – “Elevator Music for the Subconscious Water, Wind, and Fire“ by Xïola Yin
Based on indoor field recordings during lockdown time at home in Prague, as a series of functional and healing music.

Track 3 (42:50-48:05) – “Cycled Loops Macro Micros – Part 2” by Aloïs Yang
Based on recordings of live audiovisual performance with bespoke software control and feedback system. The project explores the inter-relationship between digital and physical realms. Presented as sonic happenings brought by melting ice, boiling water, and audio feedback loops, and its real-time sound-to-data interaction in conjunction with computer-generated noises. Recorded at Petrohradská Kolektiv, Prague 2018

Track 4 (48:05-64:00) – “Sonic Animism- Post Emergence Studies 2” by Aloïs Yang
