This episode of Trouble in Paradise features an experimental collage of aural history entitled ‘Leaving Teplice’.
Featuring an interview with Lisa Finden, recorded a few years before her death in 2019, the piece uses music, sound and speech to render personal memories of family, homeland and evacuation.
Detailing a 1930s childhood as the daughter of Jewish communists in the German-speaking Sudetenland of Czechoslovakia, Lisa offers a nine-year old’s perspective on the German invasion of 1938-9; the fateful breach that caused her family to flee their hometown of Teplice, first to Prague and then to England.
Produced by Matilda Jones (Teplice), this sound-collage foregrounds the family heritage that inspired her artistic alias. The original interview was recorded by Phil Jones and Lynn Rose, who are also audible (alongside snippets from Lisa’s late husband Vladia).
