„Zuhause ist eine Gewohnheit/The Home Is a Habit – Explorations of Belonging in Berlin” by Emma Stevens

What is a home? A feeling or a place? Maybe it is a woven tapestry, a multitude of threads, where singular meaning gets lost? How can one build a home in an unknown place, in unfamiliar feelings?

This piece explores the experience of being scattered in different places in the midst of the unease in the rich and incessant soundscape of Berlin. Through interviews with people of different nationalities, I tried to establish intimate portraits of their homelands and give voice to unique perspectives on belonging while simultaneously reflecting on my own process of finding a home. Combining multiple types of audio recordings, “Zuhause ist eine Gewohnheit” was inspired by Dadaist movements in the 1920s.

Eine Auseinandersetzung mit den Klängen der Stadt, sowie den Klängen des alltäglichen Lebens in Turin und der Vermischung des öffentlichen und privaten Raumes. Mein Freundeskreis, meine Familie und ich dienen als Subjekt dieser Arbeit, sowie auch die Zuhörer*innen mit ihren Perspektiven und Wahrnehmungen des Gehörten.

Aus stundenlangem Material ist eine Soundscape in Länge von 10 Min entstanden: Ein Mosaik der Klänge, die mein Leben in Turin prägen, eingefügt in die Grundstruktur eines Tagesablaufes von Sonnenauf- bis Sonnenuntergang.
