MonthlyTuesday

Open Sources is a monthly show hosted by Jessica Ekomane. The listener is invited on a journey through the open online archives of Alan Lomax and other recordings of traditional and folk music, while taking occasional side roads into related contemporary experimentations. In times of individual insecurity, these collective practices continue to offer a sense of belonging for various communities, often questioning notions of restrictive authorship.
Starting in the early 1940’s until the 1990’s, Alan Lomax gathered an extensive amount of field recordings of folk songs from many countries such as the United States, the Caribbean, Italy or Spain, leading to the (re)discovery of an overlooked musical heritage for generations of artists. Music from the people for the people, from prisons to porches and churches.
